How to Apply

Applications for the M.F.A. Playwriting program are accepted each Spring for the following Fall.  The next opportunity to join the program is Fall 2014.  Application deadline:  January 31, 2014.

The M.F.A. programs for Directing and for Acting enroll one class every three years. No applications are being accepted at this time. The next company will be enrolled in Fall 2015. Applications will be accepted starting Fall 2014.

Applications for the M.A. program in History, Dramaturgy and Criticism are accepted each Spring for the following Fall. We are now accepting applications for Fall 2013. Fall application deadline: March 31, 2013.

Applications for the M.A. program in Theatre Education (MATE) are accepted each year.  It is possible to start the program in the Summer or Spring as well as the Fall. 
Application deadlines: April 1st for Summer; July 15th for Fall; Nov. 15th for Spring.

General Procedure:

Complete the online application at

  1. Be prepared to upload:
    -Statement of Purpose
    -Writing Samples (if required)

    *Make sure your upload is successful. If your upload is successful you will see a button that says "view document."
  2. Identify 3 people for recommendation letters
  3. Take the GRE - The Catholic University institution code for reporting your score is 5104 (This is a University requirement for all graduate applicants).

Once your application has been reviewed you will be contacted by the Drama Department to schedule a visit to campus. You are invited to visit classes and meet with current students as well as meet with the Head of the program and the Chair. You are invited to sit in on a performance or rehearsal - ideally you will spend most of the day on campus, so allow plenty of time.

In addition:

Actors will be asked to present 2 two-minute monologues: one classical, one modern, one comic, one serious.

Directors will be sent instructions for preparing a brief directing exercise to present at the interview, working with students in the department.

Playwrights are required to submit a writing sample when applying online. Additional samples may be required by the Department. Send what you believe to be your best work.

MA in Theatre History and Criticism applicants are required to send in one writing sample: either a critical essay or research paper.

MA in Theater Education applicants are not required to send an additional writing sample.  What is required: transcripts, statement of purpose, your resume, GRE score, and three letters of recommendation.
