How to Apply

M.A. Theatre Education (MATE):

Applications accepted year round. It is possible to start the program Fall, Spring, or Summer. 
Application deadlines: April 1st for Summer; July 15th for Fall; Nov. 15th for Spring.

M.A. History, Dramaturgy and Criticism:

Applications are accepted each Spring for the following Fall.

M.F.A. Playwriting:

Applications are accepted each Spring for the following Fall.
PLEASE NOTE:  We are not accepting applications for the 2018-19 school year.  The next round of applications will be reviewed for the 2019-20 school year.

The M.F.A. Directing and Acting:

The department has one company of M.F.A. actors and directors every three years. The next company will be Fall 2018. We currently accepting applications.

M.F.A. Directing Application Deadline: March 15, 2018. 
Final auditions for directors will be held in late April. 

Catholic University will be recruiting actors for the 2018 MFA acting program in the following places:

The SETC/LINK Graduate School Auditions, November 10th, 2017

URTA/NYC, January 19th – 22nd, 2018

URATA/Chicago, January 29th – February 1st, 2018

Audition week at CUA: February 19th – 23rd, 2018. Audition week is a time when applicants can visit the school and sit in on classes, meet faculty and students, get a tour of the campus and audition for the MFA program. Please prepare two contrasting monologues, one comedic, one dramatic. One should be from a modern play, the second from Shakespeare. We also strongly suggest you come with an additional monologue in case we need to see a third. To schedule you visit please call 202-319-5358

General Procedure:

Complete the online application

  1. Be prepared to upload:
    -Statement of Purpose
    -Writing Samples (if required--see below)

    *Make sure your upload is successful. If your upload is successful you will see a button that says "view document."
  2. Identify 3 people for recommendation letters
  3. Take the GRE - The Catholic University institution code for reporting your score is 5104 (This is a University requirement for all graduate applicants).

Once your application has been reviewed you will be contacted by the Drama Department to schedule a visit to campus. You are invited to observe classes and meet with current students, as well as the Head of the program and the Dept. Chair. You are also encouraged to sit in on a performance or rehearsal.


In addition:

Actors will be asked to present 2 two-minute monologues: one classical, one modern, one comic, one serious.

Directors will be sent instructions for preparing a brief directing exercise to present at the interview, working with students in the department.

Playwrights are required to submit a writing sample when applying online. Additional samples may be required by the Department. Send what you believe to be your best work.

Theatre History and Criticism applicants are required to send in one writing sample: either a critical essay or research paper.

Theater Education applicants are NOT required to send an additional writing sample.  What is required: transcripts, statement of purpose, your resume, GRE score, and three letters of recommendation.
